General Motors reveals a prototype car without driver 2020
The General Motors Cruise Unit of General Motors has unveiled a model electric vehicle that does not have a steering wheel or pedals for use in its planned service of participatory self-driving.
The car, named Cruise Origin, was developed in partnership with Japanese automaker Honda, which for $ 2.75 billion acquired 5.7 percent of Cruise in 2018, in an attempt to catch up with its competitors in technology development at huge costs and risks of not Having any products ready to market.
The car comes in the form of a minibus with three seats in each side facing each other, and Cruise has not disclosed details such as the battery capacity or cost, but claims that the family that lives in San Francisco and uses participatory transportation services will see a savings of $ 5,000 annually thanks to the car.
Cruise CEO said: The box-sized SUV with sliding doors on each side will be used for the company's corporate transport service, but did not say when the new competitor, Lyft and Uber, will be launched.
Cruise had a value of up to $ 19 billion in May, and in July GM postponed its plans to launch a commercial robotic taxi service by the end of 2019, saying: Cars needed more tests, and Cruise did not get a permit to test self-driving cars. Without a safety driver in California
And while automakers around the world are racing to develop self-driving cars, the technology has not yet gained widespread acceptance from consumers, as recent accidents involving these vehicles have raised doubts about their willingness to drive public roads.
GM CEO Cruise said: “It is clear that we are still working on something that has not happened before, and that the timeframes are not entirely certain, but we are moving very quickly.
Cruise operates a transportation service for its employees in San Francisco with self-driving cars with drivers for safety, and most of its 180 test cars operate in the city, and the company CEO explained that these cars can be used to start a commercial participatory transport service before the model driverless driver is ready.
The prototype of the Cruise Origin is supposed to be tested at private facilities this year, and the production cost of the car is expected to be half the cost of the production of a high-end SUV,
such as the Tesla Model X.
